X-Ray Scattering Evidence for Macroscopic Strong Pinning Centers in the Sliding CDW state of NbSe3
نویسنده
چکیده
Using high-resolution X-ray scattering techniques, we measure the variation, q(x), of the position in reciprocal space of the CDW satellite, in the sliding state, along the length of NbSe3 whiskers. We show that structural defects and intentionally X-ray radiation-damaged regions increase locally the CDW pinning force, and induce CDW phase distortions which are consistent with those observed near contacts. Using the semi-microscopic model in Ref. [1] describing the normal ↔ condensed carrier conversion, with spatially varying parameters, we account for the experimental spatial dependence of the CDW phase gradient near both types of defects. Shear modulus and plasticity of a driven charge density wave.
We have probed the effects of transverse variations in pinning strength on charge-density-wave (CDW) structure in NbSe3 by x-ray micro-beam diffraction. In ribbonlike crystals having a large longitudinal step in thickness, the CDW first depins on the thick side of the step, causing rotations of the CDW wave vector. By measuring these rotations as a function of position and electric field, the c...
متن کاملCharge-density-wave phase slip in NbSe3
We have studied the phase-slip process by which charge-density-wave (CDW) current is converted to single-particle current at electrical contacts. Transport and X-ray scattering measurements indicate that an excess voltage Vps dropped between current contacts induces a large static deformation of the CDW phase. The measured Vpsand temperature-dependent phase-slip rates are consistent with a mode...
متن کاملA history of the I-V characteristic of CDW conductors
The humble current-voltage (I-V ) measurement has proven to be an extremely powerful probe of the physics of condensed matter systems from bulk semiconductors and superconductors to quantum dots and nanotubes. However, doing these deceptively simple measurements “right” so as to unambiguously extract particular bits of physics is hard. This is especially true of charge and spin density wave (CD...
متن کاملTransverse correlations and plasticity in the CDW conductor NbSe3 studied by X-ray microbeam diffraction
In whisker-like samples of the quasi-1D conductor NbSe3, the presence of longitudinal steps causes shearing of the CDW, and leads to a loss of transverse correlations. We use a microdiffraction setup with a spatial resolution of 300nm and an angular sensitivity of 5 mdeg to image the resulting CDW contrast between thick and thin portions of the sample. Microdiffraction in the b* c* plane shows ...
متن کامل93Nb NMR spin echo spectroscopy in single crystal NbSe3.
We report electric field induced phase displacements of the charge density wave (CDW) in a single crystal of NbSe3 using 93Nb NMR spin-echo spectroscopy. CDW polarizations in the pinned state induced by unipolar and bipolar pulses are linear and reversible up to at least E = (0.96)ET. The polarizations have a broad distribution extending up to phase angles of order 60 degrees for electric field...
